How To Sell Wedding Dress

I sold my dress on preownedweddingdresses.com. It was a Jcrew dress (the Percy gown) with minimal alterations and I sold it three weeks after my wedding. I got 60% of what I paid for it (I paid $500 on sale). Instead of paying to have it dry cleaned, which would have cut significantly into the profit, I washed mine in the bathtub and scrubbed the hem with bleach and a toothbrush. Then I hung it on a drying rack with a fan blowing on it and it didn’t even have to be pressed. There are a few super helpful tutorials online about how to do this. Polyester doesn’t have to be dry-cleaned. I had bought a second JCrew wedding dress on sale because it was such a bargain I thought I might wear it instead of the first dress (long story) and wound up selling it unused on preownedweddingdresses.com, also–under the SAME LISTING as the original gown. I got so many contacts even after the first dress sold (I didn’t take the listing down right away) I just told them I had the second dress in the same size and would they like that one instead? Sold! Easy peasy. I think JCrew is easy to sell because it is so well-known and mass-marketed, and the sizing is pretty cut-and-dry. If you’re a 2 in JCrew clothes, you’re a 2 in their wedding dresses. I know this is one reason people really don’t like JCrew for wedding dresses, but I think their dresses are really pretty and it didn’t bother me that I wasn’t terribly original. JCrew is kind of the Toyota Corolla of wedding dresses, come to think of it.

How To Sell Wedding Dress

Whether you aren’t the sentimental type or you’re just savvy, selling your used wedding dress is an easy way to recoup some money from your wedding. If your dress is in good condition, consider listing it online over selling it to a thrift store, where your listing will reach a greater volume of potential buyers and can be more easily shared and promoted. A used wedding dress in great condition and under two years old can usually sell for 50 percent of the retail price. And, if your dress is a more recognizable brand like Oscar de la Renta or Vera Wang, you could make closer to 60 percent of its retail value. Even if your gown isn’t designer, don’t give up hope—since there’s a large demand for all kinds of second hand wedding dresses, a designer label doesn’t necessarily mean your dress will sell faster. Not to mention, plus size dresses are also in high demand, so you shouldn’t worry if you’re not a sample size.

I bought a used wedding dress. I bought my wedding dress online. I bought my wedding dress for $220. I bought my wedding dress after having tried on NOT ONE SINGLE wedding dress! That’s right – I didn’t try on any wedding dresses until the used one I bought online came in the mail. And, I guess I’m lucky that it fits. I just need to get a bustle added. I love it, and my thrifty side loves it too!

How To Sell Wedding Dress

Yeah, I think there are maybe two main kinds of people who buy dresses on these sites: 1. people just looking for a pretty dress, any pretty dress, that they can get a good deal on (e.g. paying $125 for my Monique Luo dress from David’s Bridal) 2. people looking for a good deal on a specific dress they know they want, in which case it should be marked down enough that it’s worth not buying the new version I just wanted to get rid of mine (from a failed engagement to a shitty dude) and make a little money back, so I was fine with the outcome. I wish I had priced it lower sooner, though. I initially tried to get more back on it and I think that kept the interest low. My main advice to anyone trying to sell would be to price your dress to MOVE, and don’t be greedy. (And a corollary to that…I wouldn’t buy a dress expecting to get a good portion of the original cost back unless you have a dress you KNOW will sell well).
