May 19-24th, the Delray Beach Film Festival will showcase a full day
of Jewish and Israeli films on Thursday, May 21st at Movies of

all over the world, including Bosnia-Herzogovina, Spain, China,
Panama, Brazil, Canada, UK, Taiwan, Portugal, Israel and Ireland.
Films with Jewish themes include:
Empty Nest – A film by Daniel Burman, (Known as the Woody Allen of
Argentina, Burman is part of the “new wave” of Argentinian cinema.)

finds itself alone for the first time in years. While the husband
tackles the empty-nest syndrome with vivid fantasies, his wife
throws herself into a whirlwind of activities. (Feature film)
Be'ezrat Ha Shem - Two things we can't choose: our parents, and the
name they give us. Director Sigi Marx Arditi, has a 'thing' about
her first name, a kind of mild obsession that has been with her
since her army service. She sets out on a journey to the depths of
her name in order to find out why we place so much importance on our
name and if there is a connection between someone's name and the
course of their life and destiny. During this journey she meets
characters that have changed or would like to change their names in
order to change and improve their lives. (Documentary)
Play Me Allegro – A film by Alon Alsheich. An intimate and
surprising story of Julia, a former Muscovite and single mother with
a cynical sense of humor. She lives with her 5-year old daughter on
Kibbutz Nir-Am, on the border between Israel and the Palestinian
Authority. There, she and her daughter try to raise each other in a
chaotic reality. Over the past seven years, the pastoral tranquility
has been replaced by rockets from Gaza and bombardments of their
neighbors in Gaza. Between taking her daughter to violin lessons and
dance classes, Julia takes her political left wing ideology one step
further. (Documentary)
Blessed Is the Match: Life and Death of Hannah Senesh – A film by
Roberta Grossman. Hannah Senesh parachutes into Nazi-occupied Europe
to help save Hungary's Jews, only to be imprisoned alongside the
person she most wants to save -- her mother Catherine. A harrowing
account of the only military rescue mission for Jews during the
Holocaust, Blessed Is The Match is also a moving mother-daughter
tale. Narrated by three-time Academy Award nominee Joan Allen.
(Documentary)
Hachipusheet (The Beetle) - Yishai Orian, the director of the movie
and the owner of an old Volkswagen beetle is about to become a
father. His mechanic says that the car will not last long, while his
wife complains that the car is unsuitable for a baby. Attempting to
keep his beloved car, Yishai goes on a journey that begins with the
previous owners of the Beetle, continues to Jordan to renovate the
old car, and ends with the birth of his first child. The exciting,
funny, sad, and intimate memories of the Beetle’s previous owners
blend with the director’s personal story. (Documentary)
Sveener and the Shmiel – A film by David Sharp, Emmy Award-winning
special visual effects artist and first-time feature film director.
Chronically depressed Sveener becomes increasingly angry when his
dim-witted brother, The Shmiel, falls in love with an
emotionally-troubled girl. A dark and quirky romantic drama/comedy.

4th ANNUAL DELRAY BEACH FILM FESTIVAL

SPANISH-LANGUAGE & BRAZILIAN FILMSMay 24, 2009
Delray Beach, FL, <(April 22, 2009)>Returning to Delray Beach
from May 19-24th, the Delray Beach Film Festival will showcase a
full day of Spanish-language and Brazilian films, on Sunday, May
24th at Movies of Delray at Oriole Plaza, 7421 West Atlantic Avenue
(corner of West Atlantic Avenue and Hagen Ranch Road).
More than 400 films were submitted for consideration from countries
all over the world, including Bosnia-Herzogovina, Spain, China,
Panama, Brazil, Canada, UK, Taiwan, Portugal, Israel and Ireland.
Films include:
Casa de los Arabes - (Cuba) John Maass' film (House of Arabs)
follows Cuban-American belly dancer Tiffany Madera, a.k.a. Hanan, to
Havana to document how she trained a group of Cuban dancers in the
sensual art of belly dancing. Maass examines the newly formed dance
troupe, Grupo Aisha al Hanan, from its initial practice sessions to
the streets of Havana, and on to dance competitions. As the women
learn to transform from their innate salsa rhythms to tight belly
contortions, another transition takes place. Belly dancing becomes
an emotional outlet in the day-to-day struggles of life under Cuba's
tight political and economic system. At the same time the film
subtly acknowledges the egalitarianism Cuban women enjoy in
comparison to those in many Third World nations. Waving and spinning
sheer, colorful veils, these women explain that they're dancing for
the liberation of those women whose societies don't allow them such
freedoms. (Documentary)
Cachao: Uno Mas – (Cuba) A glimpse into the maestro’s life and
music, Cachao: Uno Mas pays tribute to one of the greatest

by Paulo Thiago de Oliveira. Based on a true story. Mozart Vieira, a
resident of Northeastern Brazil decides to create an orchestra
composed of peasant children who live on the street, in order to
give them a better life. Vieira introduces the children to classical
music by Bach and Mozart. The music transforms the life of these
poor children. When local politicians become aware of Vieira’s
growing recogntion, they become jealous and try to destroy his work.
Mozart and the children resist and eventally become free. Until
today, Mozart is still able to teach music to 200 children with his
Foundation Music and Life, in Pernambuco, Brazil. (Feature film)
Lokas (Chile) - A film by Gonzalo Justiniano. A gay family comedy,
Lokas tells the story of Pedro, a good-natured 9-year-old who leaves
Mexico with his father, Charlie, to live with his grandfather and
his grandfather's male lover in Chile. Outrageously funny, yet
deeply humanistic, Lokas touchingly conveys homophobe Charlie's
struggle to coexist with a father he barely knows and Pedro's dogged
efforts to bring the two men together. (Feature film)
